I remember the first time I saw this group perform on DVD (thanks "Mr.D"); it was incredible! It's amazing that these men were able to put together such an awesome sound using objects other than the usual musical instruments. It's a ways off, November; but it's a concert in our state! What do you think "Mr.D"? Would you like to go?

Just one month left ...

before school starts and everyone is beginning to gear up. Ryan has been working with a friend learning about landscaping which will help him with his classes at school. Advanced Studies in Horticulture II and Environmental Resources I & II. Jenn is attending Color Guard Camp this coming week in preparation for the marching season this year. I will be stopping by the college to see about getting registered for another class towards my degree in Information Technology. I still have to take some of the core subjects before getting more involved in the program; perhaps it's time to take that Algebra class?

Update: When teens have fall outs ...

When Jenn checked her new messages this morning she found one from her friend (we'll call her Amelia) regarding the fall out from last year. They had been sending messages back and forth this last week because Amelia left a nasty message about Jenn's newest best friend. Her message had some colorful instructional language, and an equally colorful descriptive name for Jenn's newest best friend. To say the least, Jenn was angered with Amelia and let her know that she was not happy with the message. She let Amelia know that she felt that she had been ignored the last few weeks of school and that based on how Amelia was acting now perhaps they should just remain on cordial speaking terms as they will be on the same color guard team. The response was dramatic, something about how hurt she was and that she had never ignored Jenn. Jenn decided not to respond back just yet. Then a few minutes later Jenn's sister that lives in NJ sent her a message saying that Amelia wanted her to be her friend on an online site. Jenn asked Pamela not to accept the invitation as there was really no need for Pamela to be talking to Jenn's friends (whether Jenn and the friend are getting along or not); but as Pamela does, she does and she added Amelia to her group of friends (not a positive thing to do). I hope Jenn well keep her head about all of this and not let the drama include her.

When teens have fall outs ...

About a year ago Jenn and a friend of hers were spending the night together after an evening at church with her friend's family. As life would have it, the two managed to do something stupid which was about to get them in trouble. After I had picked Jennifer up from their house I received a phone from her friend's mother. We discussed what she had discovered and the need to get together to talk about what had happened. I talked to Jenn to get her side of the story then called the other mom to set up a time to meet. For whatever reason, there didn't seem to be a good time for her family to entertain a discussion. When the girls returned to school the other parent had instructed her daughter not to have anything to do with Jenn. She was crushed!

Both of the girls were at fault for the misbehavior and yet Jenn was getting the butt end of the punishment deal. I told Jennifer that I had forgiven her and her friend, but apparently the other parent didn't. As time passed things would get worse. Jenn wasn't allowed to call her friend until she was off restriction. When she tried to contact her after it was over she was still not allowed to speak to her friend (her mother's rules). The friend began to treat Jenn with such disrespect that there were days Jenn was miserable. I tried to no avail some days to get her to understand that this was no way for a "Christian" family to treat another Christian. It went on for months and eventually Jenn took what she could get from the situation while at school. They seemed to be talking again but there wouldn't be anymore after school activities together.

One day the mother called to talk to Jenn and tell her that they had missed her and wanted her to come to a birthday party for their daughter. I was more than concerned about this sudden change in the parents boundaries. I called the mother back later and we had a nice chat and I explained that I was not at all comfortable with the sudden change, that Jenn had been through a lot of ugliness as a result of them not getting together with us to talk back when the incident occurred. I told her I would have to think about this relationship going any further than one they could maintain during school.

There is more to this situation than meets the eye. I watched the drama unfold during their time apart, and what I saw was one person contaminating the life of another. I watched as my daughter tried to take all of the responsibility for what the two had conspired to do together just to hold on to a friend as her friend belittled her and acted as though she was not worthy of her time. Why is it so hard to get our children to see that when someone, even a friend, treats them with such disrespect that they should step back and possibly move on?

This friendship may have survived had it been a healthy one; however this didn't seem to be that sound. My prayer is that this family will get the help it needs before there are greater problems to handle. Jenn has moved forward, has a new best friend and is beginning to let the people that cause drama in her life to move along. She is growing up quite nicely and I am thankful that she wants more for her life than drama and stress!

Sorrowful Discovery

During my visit at the employment security commission office today I made a sorrowful discovery; Jason Fadness (age 21) had been killed in an automobile accident. I was researching his parents address to add to my resume when it pulled up the article about the crash. A sudden wave of shock and then sorrow rushed through me; I can only imagine their grief. We've known his family since 1990 when we started working for them. Over the years the relationship went from that of employers to friends and we were able to spend time together out in Maryland at their bay house on the Chesapeake. Their three children, Jennifer, Jason and Sarah were all in the age ranges of our children; Pamela was closest in age to Jason. We had a great fun and thoroughly enjoyed our time with them. One tends to be thankful for those closest to them when something like this occurs. One of five children myself, I am so very thankful to still have all of my brothers in my life and to for us to have all of our children healthy and happy. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Lyn, Jeff, and the girls, as we mourn with them. Jason was an intelligent, creative, and funny young man with a beautiful smile; he will be missed but not forgotten. Here's hoping that those closet to him; including his friends, will honor his memory by living their lives to the fullest!

When things get busy ...

time passes all too quickly! This last month my youngest went to VA to spend five weeks with her sister, my son has made three trips with the FFA, and I've been to Tennessee and western NC to visit with "Mr.D" and is family. All of us in different directions for the first part of our summer. With all of the travels came mixed emotions, answers to questions to help piece a puzzle together, and time for reflection, relaxation and reconnecting relationships. Everyone is home now, celebrated by a homecoming and cookout, with friends and family gathering to say hello again.

Relaxing on the Tennessee River

This year we spent the 4th of July weekend in Tennessee with "Mr.D" and his family. Our trip started with a stopover in Asheville, NC for the night on Tuesday. We arrived Wednesday afternoon at Simonne & Gary's early enough to relax a bit before Theresa, Ed and Celine arrived for the cookout complete with fireworks and fun. After a good night's rest, we headed into Nashville to the mall on Thursday to see some of the sites. Then on Friday we went into a nearby town to an Irish pub for lunch and to check out all of the shoppes in the historic district. Later that day we had another cookout over at Theresa & Ed's place complete with live entertainment; Celine on her slip & slide! Saturday we went out on the Tennessee River with Simonne & Gary for some relaxation. As we traveled down the peaceful waters of the river, we wondered why we had waited until then to come to the river. Next time, we agreed to make plans to stay at the camper there at the marina. Sunday came all too soon and we had to head home to NC. The trip was long but enjoyable; all in all this was a great 4th of July celebration!

Finding a New Job

If things happen for reason, the when one door opens another one opens. For months now our company has seen a sharp decline in business due to the loss of it's largest customer. At first I thought we were doing great, but as the months passed I knew we were in trouble. Two people had been hired after me to help in customer service and within weeks were let go. I don't think I could have continued to work there either as often as one of them was asked to leave from day to day because we were slow. Then this spring and into the summer, the boss would hint as to the necessity of trimming back our hours. She suggest that perhaps we could take alternating days off each week, then perhaps us working from 12:00 noon until 4:30 p.m. since most of our active customer base was in the western part of the United States, then she change our hours of operation from 5 full days to 4 full day and 6 hours on Fridays. We loved the early out on Fridays, but wondered what the next cut would be? I found out today, so I am back in the market looking for a new job.

How do you measure the good you are doing?

I've been married twice, and given birth to four children, two with each ex-husband. The marriages didn't survive for a number of reasons; from disrespect, poor judgment, continual deceit and drug abuse hidden behind the mask of religion, habitual procrastination, compulsive spending, tax evasion, mental, emotional and physical abuse of the entire family. I am not trying to place blame on my ex-husbands, after all I did choose to marry each of them, obviously poor judgment on my part. Our children are the best part of the unions.

Each marriage lasted over ten years and within each one there were many attempts to seek help to repair the wrongs. However, as with anything else in life it takes two willing partners to make it a successful attempt and a consistent effort to stay on track. Neither of my ex-husbands were willing to go the extra mile to correct their behavior to make our marriage last. So, in each case I chose to end the marriage for the safety of our children and my sanity.

But how do you measure the good you are doing when you attempt to hold the father of these children accountable for their actions? How do you, when they continue to exhibit the same old patterns? How do you protect the children without them developing a bitterness or anger, or an unrealistic image about the greatness of their absent parent? How can you trust your children with the one that disrespected everyone so badly both directly and indirectly, if those behaviors have not changed? How can you protect your children if you are unable to see what goes on, if and when they begin to visit one another again?

Both men we given visitation; one abused that right and the other utilized it after being forced to take the children for weekends. Eventually both men decided that it was easier to step back from their visitation. One gave it up all together, the other moved away. When we move to where we had family, the one returned to our previous home town. He missed four months of child support in what appeared to be a show of anger that we moved. Then after not calling on birthdays, holidays, missing child support payments and threatening to take custody of our children, the one father decided that it was too much trouble to be a co-parent. On the one hand, it seemed like a blessing, but it would prove to be a thorn in my side and emotionally upsetting for my children.

Even though I have encouraged my children to write their dad letters and share their feelings, he would not respond. Finally this summer, during Jenn's visit with her older sister, she got to see her dad after four years. My mom and I had talked about the possibility and then the girls and I talked about it. I even had a chat with the ex before the visit to encourage him to let her talk and to answer her questions with honesty. I am happy that she got to see him, and that she feels better about things.

My son was in VA last summer and even though they rode passed his fathers house, he had no interest in seeing him. He says he as gotten past the anger, that he has let it go and chooses not to have anything to do with his father. I am not sure a forced meeting will change his feelings about his father and he has decided that it is safer for him to experience his life without the instability of his fathers support. He has had many mentors since we moved here and has found their support adequate enough to meet his current needs.

What puzzles me about the visit with Jenn's dad; Lisa's step-dad, is how my eldest responded. Somehow she feels that as parents, we didn't do anything successfully enough, to caused this reunion to happen before now? This is all to familiar to me, after all I spent nearly twenty years combined trying to make things better in each marriage. It didn't work then and trying to have these men work with me on visitation has proven to be equally as frustrating. I hope that one day my children will understand just what I experienced with these men and the lengths I went to, to insure a safe and healthy home life for them. When you have done all you can do to make it work and you do not have a willing partner, it will make everyone miserable. Still, I am left wondering if my efforts to make things better for my children were in vain when I listen to their comments about what should have happened according to them. I do not know how Jenn is feeling about all of this but it is apparent that my eldest has a strong opinion about how it could have been better.

I wish I could help them to understand all I have done to make things happen for them where their fathers are concerned, what I have done to protect them, to make things better for them. It makes is difficult for them to understand when they forget how things were when we were all together. It's hard to get them to understand that it is impossible for someone who is not willing, to change their behavior. So you do what you have to, in order to protect your children. Someone once said that your past is a great predictor of your future. If you are a dead beat dad, a habitually absent absent parent, then chances are you will repeat the behavior again. If your ex-spouse wouldn't change their behavior in the face of professional and compassionate encouragement, then it might take a miracle to cause such change.

I pray that Jenn's heart is protected from further hurt, but only time will tell. My best encouragement for all of my children has been and will continue to be, love their fathers for who they are, forgive them for the stupid things they do and accept that if their behavior never changes, it is part of the fabric of who they are. To remember to let it go, for in doing so, they win and not the bad behavior and hurt caused by their fathers.

As for the absent father, the lawyers have stated that he needs to re-establish a relationship with his children. It would benefit the children if he could learn to put his differences aside and be a co-parent. Co-parenting is what the ex-husband and I both signed on for when we decided to have children. When did that or does that cease to exist? How will I know what good I have done where my children are concerned, when will I know that what I have done has made a positive impact on their lives?

the meeting goes well ...

This past weekend Jenn met with her dad whom she has not seen in four years. It's not because she hasn't wanted to, but he failed to be involved in any of his children or step-children's lives in a positive way. Jenn says they met for lunch around 2:30 p.m. and didn't finish up the meeting until nearly 7:00 p.m. and that she got answers to even more questions than she had for him. I truly hope she found what she was looking for and I can't wait to give her a big hug for being such a mature young lady! More to come later ...

He's wonderful and it's another hit!

For the nearly a year now, we have been enjoying the music of Canadian Jazz crooner, Michael Buble. You can check out the single from his latest CD ... here he is; Micheal Buble singing "Everything" on AOL Sessions. You can search AOL Videos for more of Michael's music, like his hit song, "Home." I love having this sung to me as I am danced across the floor in the arms of my love! There are two performers I would love to see live in concert together, imagine ... Michael Buble and Diana Krall ... now that would be awesome! ;)

a visit with an absent father ...

Last night Jennifer called and asked about setting up a meeting with her absent father. Funny, my mom and I were talking about that very subject this weekend too! I have to talk to both Lisa and the father and see what can be arranged. It's been four years since he has seen her and for his own reasons. She has questions for him she says only he can answer. I hope it will be a peaceful meeting and that she is better for the experience. More later ...

NC's FFA State Convention

This week my son's school will attend the convention at an area college where teams will compete for great prizes! First place will win a Craftsman toolbox and $500.00. This would be great as he still needs $160 for Leadership Camp and $175 for a fellowship outing in August. Since he has been chosen to be the Chaplin for the group this year, the latter will be good practice for the year. I can hardly wait to hear how this week's trip will go. For now, it's all quiet on the home front; just me and Lil' Man chillin' around the house.

the stories from the lake ...

Yesterday my son returned home from his adventure at the lake, or should I say adventures? There were water-ball games, canoe races, a talent show, tug-of-war, softball, four-man race, underwater swim, and block parties each night. No way for these kids to get bored! On top of all of this the weather was beautiful most of the time they were there, in fact, it was unseasonably cool during the night and low humidity during the day. He managed to come home without a sunburn and other than the exhaustion from the activities, he was no worse for the wear.

He even managed to sneak in a dance on the last night with a really good friend; she also happens to be "Madam President" of the FFA team for the 2007-2008 year. He performed in the talent show and was quite comical in the face of technical difficulties. He is much happier that he chose to go this year than to have spent a week at home doing chores ... hmmmm ... wonder why?

More later ...

adventure at the lake ...

There will be stories to tell when my son returns from his week long adventure at the lake. Each summer the FFA takes its members to a nearby lake for all sorts of excitement. There will be races, campfires, hiking, swimming and lots of other fun things to do. This will be a bitter sweet summer camp though as one of the groups favorite teachers will be moving this year to Alabama. My son is especially fond of this teacher as he has been his mentor for the last two years. I am so thankful that Ryan has had the opportunity to have such a great teacher and friend. Thanks Mr.L, you're the best!

Summer vacations begin ...

This weekend we drove to a small town in NC to meet my oldest daughter and have lunch. After lunch my youngest would transfer her luggage to her sister's car for her summer vacation in VA with her sister and her husband. Last year her brother Ryan spent about a month with his sister and it is Jenn's turn this summer. She is looking forward to the time together as she hopes to learn some of the secrets to how Lisa stays so slim. Jennifer should have a good time as she and Lisa have some special events planned to do while she is there in VA. Here she is with one of her friends the day before heading to VA.

A Successful Year

Well, in just four more days school will let out for the summer. Where did the year go? It's been a wild ride at times, with all three of us in school, studying, taking tests and completing projects. All in all though, it's been a success! Even though I get frustrated at times with my children's antics and "gimme" attitudes, they do really well in school and I thankful for all their positive efforts.

Both of them are growing up so fast, in just a few years they will both be out of high school and into college. Another big adventure for sure! Here is a picture of Jenn on prom night and Ryan showing off some of his artistic talent.

SAE Project 01 Completed

This is Ryan's skateboard project completed. He left the wheels off in order for the photo to show the design on the board. It was inspired by the song "Crash Into Me" by Dave Matthews, thus the D M B design.

Here he shows the top of the board and the new grip tape.

After placing the wheels on the trucks (the white metal objects that hold the wheels to the board), he was ready for his grade and to ride! Grade still pending ...

The board has already been placed in use on his school project fun-box for skateboarding. Now he just needs to keep his outside toys out of the road and back in the yard when not in use. LOL! Kids, you've gotta love em!

SAE Projects 2007

Three years ago, my two children and I moved to NC to be nearer to family. When my son started at the middle school here he started off on a not so good note. Since then he has done an about face on some interesting fronts. Never would I have imagined him joining the FFA. This year he is doing two SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) projects. The first which is due Friday is a renovated skateboard. Here is a drawing of the design for the skateboard.

His second project is repairing the deck. Here is a photo of the beginning phases of the renovation process. There were two panels that had several slats broken out and the top boards were in bad shape. When he is finished he will have replaced two panels, raised two sections, pressure washed the deck and applied a two-in-one stain and sealer to the entire deck and my swing.

You know you're bad when ...

life seems to go to quickly and you can't catch up with it! LOL! It's been two months since I have posted here but as life would have it, I've been busy. I'll try and bring things up to speed here soon now that I have finished my second in a series of colleges classes towards my degree. Hopefully, in the near future ... like before 10 years from now, I will have that degree and a great new income to go with it! More later ... for now, be safe and enjoy this thing we call life! :)

time flys ...

What a funny statement! Yet there are times where it surely seems to be the case. It's been 11 days since I posted an entry here and so much has happened! My studies have been taking up a great deal of my time and the everyday things that have to be done in a day's time. Last week Amy was out on vacation, which left me in customer service by myself. Monica helped take phone orders if I was on the phone and then give me the order to put into the system. It proved to be a very busy week but all in all it appears we did all right with me handling the orders load.

Today was Amy's first day back in and was I ever thankful! Even though it was Monday, it flew by! When I got home I had to rush back out to a upcoming freshman's town meeting out in V'boro for Jennifer, then we headed to town afterwards to grab a bite, pick up some groceries, some refuge pick-up tickets and a new rolling refuge receptacle (garbage can). I still have to finish up my module's homework, post a discussion assignment and take a quiz by Wednesday at midnight ... for now though, I think my brain needs a break and my eyes need so rest too!

Footprints In Our Hearts

Friends are like footprints in our hearts, they make impressions that last a lifetime. Last night I got an email from a friend of mine from where I used to live in VA, so I responded with an short update and some picture of my children. She had asked for my phone number and to my surprise she called tonight! It's been nearly seven years since we last saw each other and it seemed like it was yesterday as we talked. Our sons were best friends in pre-school and elementary school and it was so natural for us to be the best of friends too! I really miss all of them and it was great to hear her voice. I knew right away when I answered the phone who it was; she has such a uniquely sweet voice. Anyway we talked for well over an hour, during what time we caught up on a lot that has happened in the last seven years. What was too awesome to find out was that both her son and mine, play lacrosse and love it, they both play guitar and love their skateboards. I guess distance and time didn't effect their bonds ... LOL! Here they are all together ... a friend whose footprints have remained in my heart!
